Questions, answered

Lineage search questions we hear most

How do I find relatives by surname in India?
Search opt-in public family profiles by surname, ancestral village or gotra. Match-confidence scoring surfaces probable relatives, and you connect only when both sides say yes — match, don't merge.
What is a gotra, and can I search by it?
A gotra is a patrilineal clan lineage in Hindu tradition, traced to an ancestral rishi. Yes — gotra is a first-class search field alongside surname and place, which matters because surnames changed across migrations while gotra rarely did.
Is my family's data publicly searchable?
No. Only profiles whose owners explicitly opted into public discovery are searchable, minors under 18 are never indexed, and every change to a public toggle is recorded in an audit log.
How does consent-first matching work?
When a probable match is found, both families must approve before any contact details or tree data are shared. Nothing merges automatically — you choose what, if anything, to connect.
Does lineage search cost anything?
No — searching is free. You only ever pay for optional services elsewhere on RootsNRites; finding your people is not one of them.
